It was another bumper year at the All-Star awards for Kilkenny, as eight of our All-Ireland winning hurlers each managed to secure the highest individual accolade in inter-county hurling.

The immediate reaction from the Ballyhale Shamrocks’ backroom team was that they had got out of jail, after last Sunday’s county final.

Last Sunday’s county final, which ended all square, was certainly action-packed and full of incidents.

Sunday’s Senior hurling county final has a familiar look about it, with either James Stephens or Ballyhale Shamrocks appearing in every final for the last seven years, except 2010.

In addition to an impressive haul of 14 All-Star award nominations, two Kilkenny players have been shortlisted for the coveted GAA GPA Hurler of the Year award.

Under the new GAA GPA Awards scheme, sponsored by Opel, Michael Fennelly was named the GAA GPA Player of the month for August and Tommy Walsh was named GAA GPA Player of the month for September. The players were chosen by a players committee of the GPA.

Kilkenny All-Ireland hurling star, Michael Fennelly, swapped his hurling helmet for a chef’s hat to line out with the county’s top cooks to launch details of the fifth annual Savour Kilkenny Food Festival, which takes place over the October Bank Holiday weekend, October 27 – 31.

October is traditionally the month for county finals around the country. Generally counties that have been knocked out at quarter final stages will have their championships run off early in the month, while counties like our own who have progressed that bit further in the championship tend to have their big day in late October.
